<br />
This has been such a fun challenge to be a part of again! Here is my take on the Macaron pattern. I decided to make a dress that was a little bit alternative; long, flowing, something a farm girl would wear (think The Princess Bride). I decided against the contrasting top, and decided to fit the bodice to a full length gathered skirt. If I was to make this pattern again I think I would make some adjustments to the neckline, as it gapped a little on me. I decided to omit the sleeves, though I am not 100% sure I like this. Also, the hem line gets damp easily when walking on wet grass.<br />
<br />
I am really pleased with how my dress turned out. I can imagine wearing this dress around the yard, to the farmers market or when milking my cow (not that I have one). Maverick was pretty impressed with the dress too, though he was a little photo shy.<br />

<br />
<br />
<i>First and foremost I must apologise for the tardiness of this blog post. A week ago Jamie and I moved into our new house (!) and this was soooooo much more work than I had anticipated. I am not exaggerating when I say that we have worked non-stop every day since, from the moment we wake up to the moment we fall back into bed exhausted. We bought a house on almost 10,000 square meters of land, and whilst this is an absolute dream come true, it also demanded all of my attention this past week. Here finally is my 'inspiration post' for this challenge, and tomorrow I will post my big reveal. Thanks for hanging in there with me!</i><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Macaron pattern has been in my pattern collection for a while now, but I never got around to sewing it up. This was because I wasn't so sure about how to contrast look would suite me. So I left it aside. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That's the great thing about challenges like these, they push you to put your own spin on a pattern that you might be unsure about.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As we are now entering Spring here in the Hunter Valley, I want a dress that I can wear during this time of year when the days temperatures can be a bit hit and miss. I also love cotton so this is a must. Without giving away too much more, here are some images that have inspired me...</div>

<br />
I bought a horse!!!<br />
<br />
His name is Maverick - and he is just delightful! He is a six year old Australian Quarter Horse with a personality that is the sweetest. I have been spending almost all of my spare time with him - riding him, training him, brushing him, cleaning his feet and washing his coat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH6JmdaAFEhkWeEFhu7poUrgvjhyalr5lGr_LKu9sEPaDtcO14Uo2E64sHrPua0smdnFalB9wx791jtIeqg0Kh2ebS9J9-BJzvhqdl7ft_wTBJJQXFE-u0wU676PK1bx8GwVmwkrj7RFAd/s1600/IMG_2605.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH6JmdaAFEhkWeEFhu7poUrgvjhyalr5lGr_LKu9sEPaDtcO14Uo2E64sHrPua0smdnFalB9wx791jtIeqg0Kh2ebS9J9-BJzvhqdl7ft_wTBJJQXFE-u0wU676PK1bx8GwVmwkrj7RFAd/s400/IMG_2605.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This photo below is from the day he arrived. It was absolutely bucketing rain and it was the first time he had ever been in a horse float. However, within ten minutes of arriving he allowed me to halter him and lead him around. An absolutely perfect horse.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
We are fast becoming good mates! I have never been a morning person but, now I have him, I jump out of bed and am in the paddock with him as the sun is rising. So wonderful for the soul :-)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc2gxeQeI5B9tfl5yVu2D752eKkkfRk_GroxbVHgENWSedmX6HRBKVw9lgNOuoNwGOB0LToDyP7VfnyXxmQeW6b57GI5stjHnn7PzwIqb5mT1v6S9hvmTmzASfmDl9a4iIclxSANduz-De/s1600/IMG_2630.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc2gxeQeI5B9tfl5yVu2D752eKkkfRk_GroxbVHgENWSedmX6HRBKVw9lgNOuoNwGOB0LToDyP7VfnyXxmQeW6b57GI5stjHnn7PzwIqb5mT1v6S9hvmTmzASfmDl9a4iIclxSANduz-De/s400/IMG_2630.JPG" width="287" /></a></div>
<br />
He has such a cheeky personality too. He loves to give kisses...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTYI49BhHEtwEXQEAlr15Hq9LqwYEXJxJxhY_nSkNeUWfcM34rO3kf_Ja4Qa8irFr2dhxxB6tDUx3u8nID1HEeEIFBubcKQVN12Ybp3NdTDAYTDzN7LvcDcKsOjqa8fpsPvxyuj4eeXSey/s1600/IMG_2717.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTYI49BhHEtwEXQEAlr15Hq9LqwYEXJxJxhY_nSkNeUWfcM34rO3kf_Ja4Qa8irFr2dhxxB6tDUx3u8nID1HEeEIFBubcKQVN12Ybp3NdTDAYTDzN7LvcDcKsOjqa8fpsPvxyuj4eeXSey/s400/IMG_2717.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And pull faces at the other horses...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib9U04DpXSlH3FVEdr96ps4FkGG3su6kTMbePF4LRa4Gdk44NOBgJqvCVje6h-VZ5RrpawXzkkJebtrhMav5ScJ-ae-MmuHBAZWZ7JSRiCiJxcGT5AtL2ogN5B3O_wB3f1Vtok1tWXcu8X/s1600/IMG_2678.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib9U04DpXSlH3FVEdr96ps4FkGG3su6kTMbePF4LRa4Gdk44NOBgJqvCVje6h-VZ5RrpawXzkkJebtrhMav5ScJ-ae-MmuHBAZWZ7JSRiCiJxcGT5AtL2ogN5B3O_wB3f1Vtok1tWXcu8X/s400/IMG_2678.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Can't imagine a better day, then being in the paddock with him.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

But I have also been sewing - I've made a few new things that I need to take photos of, and some up coming projects to share with you all!<br />

<br />
I have been meaning to blog about this Christmas gift for weeks now. My sister in law gifted me her stash of Liberty off cuts from <i>all</i> the sewing projects she has made using Liberty tana lawns. She must have known I dream of making a Liberty Dresden quilt... It is so nice to look through the pile, as I can remember most of the garments she has made from these prints.<br />
<br />
Such a thoughtful Christmas gift, I am very appreciative of - thanks Ally!!!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm back from my hiatus. It wasn't planned. To be honest I have had a topsy-turvy couple of months. My world has turned upside down and up again, and it took me some time to regain my footing. Some personal challenges, thrown together with a promotion at work and the commencement of studying a Masters degree at Uni while working a 40 hour week has taken its toll on my crafting among other things.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sometimes we need to step back and reassess our priorities. For me, surviving the last two months has meant letting my garden fall by the wayside. Not touching any crafts. And being <i>okay </i>with this. Not feeling bad about it. Not worrying what others think. Being honest with myself about what I am able to achieve at the moment, and knowing that this is good enough.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As a mental health worker, who works daily to support those living with mental health issues to overcome stigma, I would feel hypocritical if I didn't acknowledge that I have been struggling with my own mental health issues. I have made an effort over these past few weeks to just focus on my job, my education, my health and most importantly my marriage. And I have turned a corner with the help of supportive relationships, medication, and self care. I can concentrate for longer periods than I have been able to for a long time. My anxiety has settled and I sleep so well now. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am feeling happy again,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
calm again,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
motivated again,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
positive again. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So on the the fun stuff...</div>

Let me introduce to you "Berrima", the quilt I made for my mother for Christmas. I have called it "Berrima", after the quaint village township where I purchased the fabrics with her many years ago. This quilt is made from a pattern by an independent designer that I purchased <i>many </i>years ago (forgive me, since moving my sewing room into the other room I have misplaced the pattern. Once I find it I will credit the designer).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"Berrima" was made using woollen batting and an eclectic collection of quilting fabrics. I decided to contrast the floral prints with the red ticking strips, and also a paisley print binding. This beauty is 2.3 meters square, making it large enough to drape over a queen sized bed. I made a couple of mistakes with my machine quilting, mainly I suspect this was due to my basting. I secured the layers with quilting pins, but I don't think I used enough, so there was a little bit of movement in some parts. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have to admit, it was a little hard to give away :-)</div>

I have one of those compulsive personalities that <strike>wants</strike> needs everything to be in order. For dressmaking this means I spend the first half an hour of any project tracing out the patterns onto paper so that the original is not damaged or cut into in the cutting out process. Yes this takes me time, but it means that my patterns stay all neat and perfect. Plus, if I want to sew the same pattern later as a gift for someone, I still have all the sizes to choose from.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Swedish tracing paper, freezer paper, and interfacing have all been tried as a copy source, however none of these have ever worked for me properly. Some were bulky, some creased badly, and some the marker completely rubbed off! My strategy wasn't working.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Whilst lamenting this to a sewing friend the other day, she pulled out some Burda Style tracing paper she had bought from Spotlight recently, and suggested it might solve my dilemma. How had I not seen this before?!? How I spent all those years tracing out my patterns on sub standard stationary is now unfathomable. I rushed to Spotlight and bought three packets.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ladies and gentlemen, meet my new Burda Style tissue paper...</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I have given the paper a test run on my Colette Patterns Sencha blouse, and it traced out perfectly. I used an Artline marker pen to trace the pattern, and it didn't even smudge a bit. The tissue paper itself is lightweight and folds up as thinly as regular pattern tissue does.<br />

A Colette Patterns <b><a href="http://www.colettepatterns.com/shop/ginger">Ginger skirt </a></b>in a beautiful navy linen.<br />
<br />
One of my new years resolutions (I know I haven't posted about these yet - I will soon I promise!) is to sew at least five different patterns from the Colette Patterns range. I pledged this resolution on Karen's blog post <b><a href="http://didyoumakethat.wordpress.com/2013/01/01/put-your-money-where-your-mouth-is/">"Put your money where your mouth is"</a></b>. This goal is motivated by the fact I own <strike>too many</strike> a number of patterns from the Colette Pattern's range, plus the book, and all I have made from the brand to date has been a bunch of Sorbetto tops, and some Nutmeg knickers. That's all! Which is just so silly when these patterns are so cute!<br />
<br />
You see, I have a weakness for small scale floral prints, and let's be honest, any Tana Lawn fabric from Liberty of London (Twitter and Instagram peeps you have surely worked this out by now!?). I usually turn these fabrics into dresses or tops. Whilst having lots of floral garments is nice, and quite pretty to look at in my wardrobe, I am in dire need of some wardrobe staples. Classic garments in basic colours to complement my floral addiction. For this Ginger skirt I knew I wanted a plain navy fabric. I went to Spotlight and found the most incredible navy linen.<br />
<br />
I cut this Ginger as a Version 1 in a size 8. I didn't take any length off the hem as I like a knee length skirt. I used an invisible zipper and added some top stitching to the waistband.<br />
<br />
And I have a confession to make. I just couldn't help myself. I may have added some Liberty to this skirt... see if you can spot where :-)<br />

What I learnt from sewing this pattern:<br />
- Linen feels divine.<br />
- Linen creases easily.<br />
- Waistbands lined with Liberty "<b><a href="http://www.liberty.co.uk/fcp/product/liberty/liberty-art-fabrics/fairford%20b%20tana%20lawn,%20liberty%20art%20fabrics/34633">Fairford</a></b>" make me smile :-)<br />

My loved ones really do know me! This year I was lucky enough to receive a number of handmade items which are true treasures.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This quilt was gifted to me by my husband who knows I have a soft spot of antique quilts, fabrics from the 1930's (<a href="http://planetpatchwork.com/feedsack.htm"><b>feedsacks</b></a>), and the Grandmothers Flower Garden pattern. I often 'watch' quilts on ebay, and save the images for inspiration should I ever have the time to make my own. Well, he peaked at my account and ordered this one for me from America. A true Grandmothers Flower Garden, with feedsack fabric and the tiniest hand quilting stitches. The quilt is even edged in green fabric typical of the era. My jaw dropped when I opened the box...</div>

The second gift from Jamie was a preserving kit I had bought from <a href="http://redbacktrading.com.au/"><b>The Redback Trading Company</b></a>. Whilst this is not strictly a handmade gift, it does allow me to <i>hand make </i>preserves and jams, so I think it counts. So far I have preserved cucumbers from my garden in dill pickle vinegar, and made some strawberry jam.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My very clever sister in law and her husband-to-be gave us a cheese board they had made from Tasmanian timber. I know it is not usual to smell ones cheese board, but I can't help it, this board smells divine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And as if the cheese board wasn't enough, she also made me this delicate Christmas star from vintage sheet music...<br />

I didn't drop the ball on the hand made gift giving either. Mel will receive her gift in February (because I just didn't get her it finished in time), I gave mum a quilt, Mill the book <b><a href="http://www.bookdepository.com/Knitting-247-Veronik-Avery/9781584798446">Knitting 24/</a></b>7, and my other sister in law some hand spun yarn along with Colette Pattern's <b><a href="http://www.colettepatterns.com/shop/sencha">Sencha</a></b>.<br />

<i>~ If you can't have gratuitous photos of your ducklings at New Years, well when can you? ~</i></div>
<br />
As this year draws to a close, like many other sewing bloggers I am taking time to reflect on the sewing year that was 2012. Before looking back over this blog, I thought what I had made most this year was sewn items. I knew I hadn't sewn as much as I did the<b><a href="http://buckinghamroad.blogspot.com.au/2011/12/sewing-in-2011-looking-back.html"> year prior</a></b>, and I was feeling a bit down about it to be honest. This year has been difficult personally and my sewing energy has felt pretty zapped at times. But now I have actually clicked through, I can see that this year really wasn't such a handmade right off as I thought (what is a "handmade right off" anyway?).<br />
<br />
So, the details:<br />
<b>Sewn items: </b>18 (1 Cordova jacket, 5 Sorbetto's, 2 1920's chemise, 2 pairs of knickers, 2 pairs pyjama shorts, 2 Sorbetto dress's, 1 Cambie dress, 3 aprons)<br />
<b>Hand spun yarn:</b> 8 skeins (4 white, 3 pink, 1 mustard)<br />
<b>Knitted items: </b>4 (2 baby cardigans, 1 tam, 1 scarf)<br />
<b>Quilts:</b> 2 (1 baby quilt, 1 for my mum)<br />
<br />
That's 32 items hand made. An item made more than once per fortnight! I am wrapped with this result, considering spinning wool takes me hours, as does knitting, and I won't even say how long that quilt has taken me!<br />
<br />
Here are my favourites for 2012...<br />
<br />
My fifth Sorbetto in the gorgeous Liberty of London "Lodden". This was my first Sorbetto with self made bias binding and I love the result.<br />

<br />
I drafted a simple "Alys Fowler" style gardening dress, using the Sorbetto pattern as my starting block. This dress is incredibly comfortable, and perfect for our Australian summers.<br />

The next on my list would have to be the sweet lingerie set I made for my dear friend in Switzerland. I used Casey's 1920's chemise tutorial, and think it turned out beautifully...<br />

Pattern testing for Tasia certainly was THE sewing highlight for 2012. I first tested the Cambie dress pattern back in the middle of the year, being delayed with the final picture post due to heart surgery. I made the dress from a white cotton I been saving until <i>the </i>perfect dress pattern came along.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This Liberty of London 'Lodden' has been in my fabric stash for a little while now, and I couldn't quite decide what to do with it, as I had only purchased 1 meter. When I saw the illustration of the Cordova Jacket, I knew a Sorbetto would sit nicely underneath a jacket of that style. The navy's match perfectly too!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I sewed a size 4 in the top, with the only adjustment being I added three inches to the hem line. The Sorbetto's I have made in the past all sit at a nice length when worn with a skirt, but when I wear them with jeans they just feel too short. The three extra inches on my Liberty version really makes a difference! I also added self made bias binding from the left over fabric. I will post a little tip on how I made the bias binding later this week.</div>

I have been saving all the little scrap pieces of Liberty that is left over from every project I make. My dream is to one day make an entire Dresden Quilt using my scraps of Liberty fabric, with the plates set against a plain white cotton. Sounds amazing doesn't it...?! Slowly slowly :-)<br />

The beginning of this month marked my birthday. It was a weekday so was reasonably normal. I went to work, had birthday cake with my colleagues and did a few support visits. When I arrived home I was treated to a home made dinner and an amazing gift - a brand new spinning wheel! When I decided to learn to spin back at the beginning of this year the agreement was<b><a href="http://buckinghamroad.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/my-spinning-wheel.html"> I purchase a second hand wheel </a></b>and see if I liked/could spin wool. I loved it. I joined the spinning Guild, and spent the rest of this year handling the most wonderful Merino and Alpaca fleeces and turning them into yarn. My new spinning wheel is an <b><a href="http://www.ashford.co.nz/newsite/spinning-wheels/104/spinning/joy-double-treadle/moredetail.html">Ashford Joy Double Treadle</a></b>. It is so unbelievably compact - it can even be carried around in its own carry case!<br />

And what about my old wheel? It was enthusiastically accepted by a wonderful local friend who is treading the path of sustainable living. She is <b><a href="http://littlegreenvillage.wordpress.com/2012/11/11/a-lovely-surprise/">loving learning to spin.</a></b><br />
<br />
If any of you are interested in learning to spin, I would say to you "have a go!". Buy yourself a working second hand spinning wheel and a bag of fleece (washed or unwashed - it doesn't matter). Then sit down and watch a few YouTube videos to get an understanding of what spinning <i>looks </i>like, read a bit about it, then give it a try. I promise you will look at yarn in a whole new light after spinning your own skein. If you're not sure, why not support a spinner and try buying hand spun yarn for your next knitting/crocheting project? There are plenty for sale on sites like Etsy.<br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
After keeping this secret for almost two months I am so excited that I can finally show you my <b><a href="http://sewaholic.net/introducing-the-next-pattern-the-cordova-jacket/">Cordova Jacket</a></b>! To be honest I was a little nervous about sewing an intermediate jacket pattern, as I have never sewn a jacket before (though I do have one half completed). When I saw the pattern and read through the instructions the nerves completely settled. Tasia really does know how to write simple, easy to understand instructions without "dumbing down" the patten or techniques. This jacket had it all; lining, zipper, interfacing, princess seams, and a peplum.</div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
I decided on navy for the colour and fortunately found the perfect Italian wool crepe in my local fabric store. I had promised Tasia a Liberty of London lining, but it just didn't seem to suit the drape of the crepe fabric. Instead, I opted for a soft lining fabric in a pinky/latte colour. I sewed a size 8 and did not have to make any changes. The jacket went together very easily thanks to the clear instructions. I am <i>soooo </i>happy with how it turned out. It looks dressy and casual at the same time, know what I mean? Also, my husbands comment was "you could buy that in a store".... always a nice compliment (do other people say that to you as a form of compliment when you make something?). And I did keep my promise to Tasia in a way, I made a Sorbetto top from a Liberty of London Tana Lawn to match the jacket!</div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: start;">
So without further ado, here is my version of the Sewaholic's latest pattern, the Cordova jacket...</div>

I just <i>had </i>to share this with you all! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you are a Ravelry user I am sure you have seen<b><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sheep-heid"> this tam pattern </a></b>or the similar<b><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sheep-carousel"> tea cosy pattern</a></b> whilst lurking around the pages. A fellow spinner brought this hat along for show and tell at our last Spinners and Weavers Guild meeting. She knitted this from seven different alpaca yarns that she spun herself! All natural colours. I was in awe and just <i>had </i>to grab some photos for you all using my iPhone (so they are a touch grainy). If you are a fellow knitter or spinner, or just love a good quality knit, I know you will appreciate this ...</div>

Are any of you maintaining a long distance relationship with a dear friend? I am and I miss her so much! We aren't strangers to long distance friendship, having <b><a href="http://buckinghamroad.blogspot.com.au/2010/07/we-meet-again.html">done it before</a></b>. Mill lives in Zurich now and I haven't seen her for over a year. We still keep in touch through emails, texts, postcards and Skype dates, but none of it is the same as actually being face-to-face. I wanted to make her something special for her birthday this year, and knew a set of delicates would fit the bill nicely.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I followed <a href="http://blog.caseybrowndesigns.com/2009/08/1920s-chemise-inspired-top/"><b>Casey's 1920's Chemise</b></a> tutorial for the top and used McCall's 2389 for the knickers. I had great success with this Chemise pattern last year when <b><a href="http://buckinghamroad.blogspot.com.au/2011/09/french-knickers.html">I made it for myself with a set of French knickers</a></b>. For the Chemise I used a medium weight ivory satin that has a beautiful drape. I matched this with some ribbon for the straps and an ivory stretch lace. The top was constructed using French seams and a rolled hem. For the knickers I chose a Liberty of London Tana Lawn because, well, is there any cotton softer than a true Tana Lawn?! All the knickers needed were some thin pieces of elastic and a small piece of cotton jersey for inside of the crotch piece.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pair were then wrapped in a vintage scarf, tied with ribbon, and posted to Switzerland. Mill loved them and the fit was perfect, much to my relief!</div>

The gorgeous Spring weather we are already experiencing here in the Hunter spurred me on to begin planning my Spring/Summer sewing. My goal for this season is to sew a collection that is suitable for everyday where. Most garments I sew are lovely, yet are items I do not often wear. My pattern collection reflects this also.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So recently I began to stock up on everyday wear garment patterns. I bought some patterns from Sewaholic and Colette Patterns. I also recently purchased Gertie's book, which does have a couple of things I would class as everyday wear for me. I also purchased these four patterns from <b>a<a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/auntnonniesnest">untonniesnest</a> </b>on Etsy:</div>

I decided that if I am going to be focusing on sewing everyday wear, I needed to make an effort to sew the garments in fabric I would feel special wearing. Liberty always feels good to wear, so I bought a few pieces on ebay.<br />

I promise this will be the last spinning related post for a while, but I just had to share with you the prize I received from winning an Ashford Facebook competition! The call was made for people to submit a photo of themselves and their Ashford product, with two winners to be selected and rewarded with an Ashford apron.<br />
<br />
I entered this photo...<br />

Psst - In case you were wondering what on earth aprons have to do with spinning... one must wear an apron to protect their clothing when spinning. Fibres like to attach themselves to your clothes and are super hard to remove. At other times, when spinning freshly shorn / unwashed fleeces, the apron catches all the dirty bits and pieces that fall onto your lap!</div>

Modelling a new Sorbetto top with the ultimate accessory - newly hatched ducklings!<br />
<br />
I made this Sorbetto in a Size 4, which fitted much better than the previous which had been a little bigger. I made this using a Japanese Lawn cotton and trimmed the edges with complimentary bias binding.<br />
<br />
I decided to keep the folded panel down the centre. Although next time I think I will branch out a little and try a few different styles (pleats, buttons, lace).<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br class="Apple-interchange-newline" />Recently I paid a visit in person to the farm where <a href="http://www.feltfine.com.au/"><b>Feltfine </b></a>is based deep in the beautiful Hunter Valley. I invited a new blogging friend along to join me for the trip, as I knew she was an enthusiastic knitter and would love some of the Alpaca yarns Gary had for sale.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As we entered the farm we were greeted with <b><a href="http://greenthumbsanddirtynails.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/visit-to-feltfine-part-1-alpacas.html">these beautiful Alpaca's</a></b>, we were soon to discover an Aladdin's Cave of woolly treasures. Given a washing basket each to utilise for collecting our goodies, <b><a href="http://littlegreenvillage.wordpress.com/">my partner in knitting crime</a></b> and I were left to browse what the shed had to offer us. We spent a leisurely hour handling the softest of fleeces, digging through tubs of yarn, and diving into bags of the most beautifully dyed fibres...</div>

The photo is grainy because at the time I didn't want to take 'nice' photos of my effort. I was embarrassed by how lumpy and uneven the yarn turned out to be. I was frustrated by my obviously novice ability and didn't think it was good enough.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicP_rRD-ZPvtAbBbbIgUJADL_OndUkPIJn5ewRRar649QrcKzIQPjWajmDd9lrnETvNm2LPz9Gw00GqrJZNkI1xcIson_SFYTQAd1w2m1l_bepFSzSO1965JbbsQZWJd9ey22yDmBtz3Jg/s1600/photo+(14).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicP_rRD-ZPvtAbBbbIgUJADL_OndUkPIJn5ewRRar649QrcKzIQPjWajmDd9lrnETvNm2LPz9Gw00GqrJZNkI1xcIson_SFYTQAd1w2m1l_bepFSzSO1965JbbsQZWJd9ey22yDmBtz3Jg/s320/photo+(14).JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Now I can see it really is beautiful. Handmade yarn does not need to look like it has been bought from a store. This skein has been made by imperfect hands on an imperfect timber wheel. It represents the beginning of my spinning journey. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My starting block.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I've been told to keep the skein as a memento by some. Others have instructed me to knit something 'extra special' from it. For now it is hidden away at the bottom of my knitting basket, kept safe, and quietly reminding me that it doesn't hurt to be a beginner sometimes.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I first decided to make this pattern in February 2011, can you believe that?! A year and a half ago? Talk about procrastination! The good news is that I am cruising along now and am getting close to finishing it.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I want to share with you some photos of where I am currently up to. Please be kind, this is the first jacket I have ever made. I know some of the seams are a bit <b><a href="http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dodgy">dodgy</a></b>, and the scallops are not perfect. But I am learning quite a lot from making this two piece suit, so for that I am grateful. I think a pink two-piece suit is a necessity for any vintage wardrobe. :-)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

The skirt has been cut out and is ready to be sewn up. I am going to make it with an invisible zip because I like the look of these, even though the pattern asks for a side zip.<br />
<br />
So, my question to you all is what is your preferred garment underlining method? I would love to get some tips/recommendations before I decide on how to underline the jacket and skirt. Any advice would be very much appreciated!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">When I began knitting back in January I had unexpected success. I used YouTube to teach me certain stitches, and then persevered hard until I got the hang of it. I was motivated by the idea that I would soon be able to create my own knitted clothing by hand, and not have to rely on all store bought winter garments. The thought of becoming self sufficient in not only sewing my own clothes but also knitting my own clothes appealed to me greatly. The world of wool opened up to me and I was learning the difference between Merino and Shetland wool, and appreciating blends containing alpaca and mohair.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The thought occurred to me in February that I could take this new found skill one step further, and try making my own yarns by learning how to spin wool. I was aiming high. I knew no one who spun, and better still had never actually seen or touched a spinning wheel. "How hard could it be?" I told myself. I bought my spinning wheel off eBay for $90, and a 1kg bag of Merino wool for $30. I received both in the post on same day, and spent the evening assembling the wheel and appreciating Jamie's assistance in adjusting the tension.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It took me over three weeks to 'get' how to spin. I watched countless YouTube videos, studied the spinners hands, fingers, movements, peddling. Trying to absorb every aspect of their spinning methods. What I learnt quickly was that spinning is very much a physically involved activity. The wheel powered by the foot/feet, the wool guided by the hands and fingers, and the eyes keeping watch over the tension. At first it sort of feels like the time when you were a kid, and your Kindergarten teacher the class "pat your head and rub your tummy" at the same time. And do you remember how you felt really uncoordinated? That was how I felt for at least three weeks. Then it all clicked into place. I now call myself a "Spinner", and I am knitting a scarf from my own hand spun wool.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I am super in love with my spinning wheel, and feel I have made another step towards self sufficiency.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

For anyone who is interested, my wheel is an Ashford Kit Kraft and from my research I estimate it was made in the 1970's. If you are thinking of buying a wheel for yourself second hand, I would recommend buying a <b><a href="http://www.ashford.co.nz/newsite/spinning-accessories/33/spinning/maintenance-kit/moredetail.html">maintenance kit</a> </b>from Ashford (these can be found on eBay for around AUD$25) and are worth it, because you can replace your leather piece, hooks, strings, and give the wheel a bit of oil. The Ashford website also has an online book <b><a href="http://www.ashford.co.nz/newsite/how-to-spin/book/2.html?page=1">Learn to Spin</a></b>. I don't mean to sound like I am 'pushing' Ashford products. There are many different spinning wheel suppliers out there. It just happened that I bought an Ashford and so far have been really pleased with their products.<br />
